Amen Corner formed in 1966 in Cardiff, Wales.
After signing to Deram records in May 1997 they hit the UK Top 20 with
the classic bluesy Gin House Blues three months later.
Distinctive lead singer Andy Fairweather-Low
quickly becaame a pin-up and more chart success followed including,
World Of Broken Hearts (number 24), Bend Me, Shape Me
(number 30) and High In The Sky (number 6).
Within the group there was a management battle
regarding the ownership of the band with manager Don Arden employing
menacingly defensive tactics until the band decided to move from Decca
records to Immediate Records. While at Immediate they enjoyed their
solitary UK Number 1 in early 1969 with (If Paradise Is) Half As
Nice. It was the first time a Welsh
band had topped the charts in the UK.
Amen Corner split later the same year when the
label collapsed. The band splintered to form Fairweather - made
up of Fairweather-Low, Weaver, Byron, Taylor and Neil Jones - and
Judas Jump made up of the remaining members.
